Having worked for a company that managed the sales force with a little carrot and a BIG stick, I can tell you I was the top performer for 4 years not because of fear of the tiranical owner nor the little carrot that was offered but rather for being part of the team that was growing the company into something more!

That intrinsic motivation kept me there much longer than I should have stayed!
